Marching Bands Celebrate Success

Today the Board of Education recognized the Calvert High School marching band for winning the 2019 US Bands Group IA National Championship, a first in the history of Calvert County. The band received an overall score of 92.705 and also won Best Music and Best Visual.

Dr. Daniel D. Curry, Superintendent, said, “We are proud of the instrumental music programs in all of our high schools. A vibrant band enhances the high school experience for the musicians and the spectators alike. Hats off to Calvert High for winning the district’s first national championship.”

On the road to winning the national championship, the Calvert High band finished first in the US Bands Group IA Maryland State Championship for the second time with an overall score of 90.120, winning awards for Best Music, Best Visual, Best Overall Effect, and Best Colorguard. The band is under the leadership of director Demetri Bedel, assistant director and percussion instructor Brandon Bryant, colorguard instructor Haley Graham, and colorguard choreographer Casey Garner.

The Huntingtown High Marching Hurricanes competed in the Tournament of Bands and won first place in the Chapter 9 Championship with a score of 90.35. In the Atlantic Coast Championship, the band placed 9th with a score of 91.3.

The Northern High Marching Patriots won first place in the US Bands Maryland States Group IIA Championship and brought home awards for Best Music, Best Effect, Best Guard, and Best Percussion.

The Patuxent High marching band won second place in the US Bands Maryland States Group IIA Championship and fifth place in the national championship. At the state competition, the Panthers won Best Visual.
