Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) is pleased to announce that Grace Minakowski, rising senior at Huntingtown High School, was elected to serve as the 2024-2025 Student Member of the Board of Education by the Calvert Association of Student Councils (CASC). Miss Minakowski was sworn in at the May 9, 2024, BOE meeting. Her term will begin on June 1, 2024.
Miss Minakowski serves as the Maryland Association of Student Councils Special Issues Director, is an officer for the Calvert Association of Student Councils and is an intern with Senator Michael A. She has also served as the Chair and Legislative Chair of the Maryland Youth Advisory Council for a two-year term, an appointed body for youth established by the MD state legislature in 2009.
Outside the student advocacy world, Grace is a captain of the HHS Cross Country team and acts/does set design for the HHS Eye of the Storm Productions theatre company.
As SMOB, Grace is focused on student rights and student representation. She hopes to advocate for and improve the educational, safety, and expression-related rights of students. She also wants to make the role of SMOB better known in the community by bringing herself to student events and forums. She is beyond excited to work with her colleagues on the board and community at large to make CCPS a better place for all youth stakeholders!
The position of Student Member of the Board of Education (BOE) is established by the Annotated Code of Maryland. Officially, the student is a non-voting member of the Board; however, the student may cast a symbolic vote on all matters coming before the Board. To serve as the student member on the Calvert BOE, the student member must be a rising high school junior or senior in CCPS. The student member’s term runs from June 1 through May 31. The primary responsibility of the student member of the board is to facilitate the flow of information between the BOE and students and is encouraged to share students’ feedback on issues before the Board.
