CCPS Appoints Five School Administrators for the 2024-2025 School Year

The Board of Education of Calvert County Public Schools approved the appointment of five school administrators at the meeting held on June 13, 2024. The administrative appointments are:

Jamie Smith

Ms. Jamie Smith

Jamie Smith as Principal of Dowell Elementary School. Ms. Smith has been the assistant principal at Southern Middle School since 2019, and has also served as a dean of students, assistant principal, and elementary teacher. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 2007, her Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Texas, Arlington, and during the 2022-2023 school year, she participated in our Next Level Leadership Principal Academy. Ms. Smith said that she looks forward to working with her neighboring leaders to strengthen the relationships they have in the community.

 

Bryan Sammons

Mr. Bryan Sammons

Bryan Sammons as Assistant Principal of the Career and Technology Academy. Mr. Sammons currently serves as an Inclusive Education Facilitator. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Arts from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. His education journey began as a special educator in Calvert County, where he worked across multiple campuses from 2005 to 2013. Subsequently, he transitioned to the role of dean of students at Mill Creek Middle School before holding various assistant principal positions. Mr. Sammons said he is looking forward to the challenge and cannot wait for the school year to get started.

 

Melissa Huffman

Ms. Melissa Huffman

Melissa Huffman as Assistant Principal of Mt. Harmony Elementary School. Ms. Huffman currently serves as assistant principal at Mutual Elementary School. Before this position, she taught first and third grades at Huntingtown Elementary School, as well as second grade at Kingsford Elementary School in Mitchellville. Ms. Huffman earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland, College Park, and her Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from McDaniel College. Ms. Huffman stated that she is excited to continue her journey as an assistant principal for Calvert County Public Schools.

 

Willanette Thomas-Lohr

Ms. Willanette Thomas-Lohr

Willanette Thomas-Lohr as Assistant Principal of Southern Middle School. Ms. Thomas-Lohr currently serves as an Inclusive Education Facilitator. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Special Education from Bowie State University, and her Master of Science in Curriculum Instruction and Assessment from McDaniel College. Ms. Thomas-Lohr began her teaching career in Calvert County Public Schools in 2001. Additionally, she contributes to the Maryland State Department Expert Review Team. Ms. Thomas-Lohr stated that she looks forward to serving students, families, and stakeholders while becoming a member of the Southern Middle School community.

 

Angelica Van Bavel

Ms. Angelica Van Bavel

Angelica Van Bavel as Assistant Principal of Mutual Elementary School. Ms. Van Bavel began her teaching career as a kindergarten teacher in Charles County. She later transitioned to teaching second grade before joining Calvert County Public Schools. Initially, she served as a hybrid teacher during the 2020-2021 school year, then taught first grade at Huntingtown Elementary School. Currently, she holds the position of dean of students at Windy Hill Elementary School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, and her master’s degree from Towson University. Ms. Van Bavel said she looks forward to collaborating with the staff, students, and families of Mutual Elementary and she promises to promote an environment where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
