FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2020 Teacher of the Year and Educational Support Professional of the Year

Calvert County Public Schools proudly announces Caitlin Fregelette as the 2020 Teacher of the Year and Tim Contee as the Educational Support Professional of the Year. Because the school system could not hold its traditional gala event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the winners were announced during festive live-streamed visits to their homes.

Mrs. Fregelette teaches physical education at Calvert High School, and Mr. Contee is an instructional assistant at the Career and Technology Academy.

Dr. Daniel D. Curry, Superintendent, said, “Mrs. Fregelette and Mr. Contee are outstanding selections and outstanding representatives for all of our dedicated and caring employees. The selection committee did an outstanding job once again.”

Mrs. Fregelette’s contributions to Calvert High School go far beyond her work in the gym and fitness room. Dr. Steve Lucas, principal, said, “Mrs. Fregelette’s unmatched passion for health and fitness manifests itself daily as she leads students through rigorous life lessons to motivate and inspire them. Not only a master teacher, Mrs. Fregelette sets the standard at Calvert High School for building effective relationships, showing empathy, and providing care.” In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Mrs. Fregelette sponsors the Cav Culture club and leads the staff in fitness activities, both of which support the overall wellness of the school. She is an executive board member of SHAPE Maryland, has written standards and curriculum at the district and state level, and coordinates professional development for Calvert County physical education teachers.

As an instructional assistant at the Career and Technology Academy, Mr. Contee’s duties include working with students who are attending the Calvert Alternative School. “His ability to build relationships, set high expectations, and hold students accountable for their schoolwork and life choices sets Mr. Contee apart,” said Travis Mister, assistant principal of the Career and Technology Academy. “One of Mr. Contee’s best traits,” he said, “is being able to identify and recognize strategies to maximize students’ strengths while building up their weaknesses.” Mr. Contee extends his influence beyond the Career and Technology Academy by coaching the girls basketball team at Calvert High, his alma mater. He coached his team to a state championship in 2013 and has been named the Calvert County Girls Basketball Coach of the Year multiple times.

Both the Teacher of the Year and the Educational Support Professional of the Year received a two-year lease on a new vehicle, which was made possible through a partnership of Calvert County Public Schools and Bayside Auto Group.

Mrs. Fregelette will move on to the Maryland Teacher of the Year competition, with the winner being announced in the fall.

The Teacher of the Year and Educational Support Professional of the Year recognition was sponsored by Bayside Toyota, Educational Systems Federal Credit Union, Community Bank of the Chesapeake, Exelon Generation, and the Optimist Club of Calvert (Prince Frederick and Solomons).
