Emergency Codes for Calvert County Public Schools is outlined in administrative Procedures 1510.3 regarding School Closings, Delayed Opening and Early Dismissals Due to Emergencies.

How Decisions Are Made Based On Weather Conditions

When Schools Are Delayed Due To Weather

If on a given day schools have a scheduled two-hour early dismissal and a two-hour delayed opening is announced, then students will NOT be dismissed early and will remain in school until the end of their regular school day.

Two-Hour Delayed Opening – Weather Related

  • School opening will be delayed two hours.
  • There will be no a.m. 3-year-old Pre-Kindergarten.
  • All 12-month administrators, supervisors, and emergency personnel, report on time.
  • 12-month educational support staff may report up to one hour late.
  • School-based Child Nutrition Staff are to follow their approved Two-Hour (Unplanned) Late Arrival Schedules. No staff may report prior to 8:00 a.m.
  • The workday for 10- and 11-month employees will begin two hours after their regularly scheduled start time.
  • Childcare will open at 7:30 a.m.

When Schools Dismiss Early Due To Weather

Two-Hour Early Dismissal

  • Schools closed two hours early.
  • 10- and 11-month employees will be released two hours before their regularly scheduled end time of their contractual workday.
  • Unless emergent conditions prevent this from occurring, School-based Child Nutrition Staff are to leave as soon as all students are fed, and critical areas of the kitchen are closed out for the day.
  • 12-month personnel, including emergency personnel, will work regular hours unless released by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
  • After-school and evening activities are canceled.
  • After-school childcare programs will remain open, but it is encouraged for parents to pick up as soon as possible.

One-Hour Early Dismissal

  • Schools closed one hour early.
  • 10- and 11-month employees will be released one hour before their regularly scheduled end time of their contractual workday.
  • Unless emergent conditions prevent this from occurring, School-based Child Nutrition Staff are to leave as soon as all students are fed, and critical areas of the kitchen are closed out for the day.

When Schools Are Closed Due To Weather

Code White

Called when conditions are not safe for any employee to attempt to report to work. Safety concerns may include road conditions or conditions at CCPS facilities including school buildings.

  • No employees report.

Code Red

Called when conditions are not safe for non-emergency personnel to report to work. Safety concerns may include road conditions or conditions at CCPS facilities including school buildings. Non-emergency employees are not to report to work when a Code Red is called.

  • All emergency personnel report as usual.
  • All other personnel do not report to work.
  • Childcare is closed.
  • Afternoon/Evening activities are canceled.

Code Yellow

Called when conditions may be dangerous but are anticipated to improve so as to allow employees to safely get to work.

  • Schools closed for all students and 10- and 11-month employees.
  • All emergency personnel report as usual.
  • The 12-month non-emergency staff should report at 9 a.m. Work hours will be 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Liberal leave is in effect. Employees must notify their immediate supervisor.
  • Childcare is closed.
  • Afternoon/Evening activities are canceled.

Code Green

Called when students are not reporting to school due to inclement weather, but conditions are safe for employees to report at the normal time.

  • All emergency personnel report as usual.
  • All 12-month employees report on time.
  • Liberal leave is in effect. Employees must notify their immediate supervisor.
  • Schools closed for all students and 10- and 11-month employees.
  • Childcare is closed.
  • Afternoon/Evening activities are canceled.

Emergency Personnel

The following positions are designated as emergency personnel. These staff members are to report to work as noted in the Code descriptions above.

  • Superintendent and/or his/her designee
  • Designated emergency maintenance staff
  • School Facilities supervisory personnel
  • Transportation supervisory personnel
  • Building Services Manager and Building Services Assistant Manager at all buildings

Liberal Leave Policy

Employees are granted leave without prior written notification or requests being made. Employees must notify their supervisor and complete any necessary leave slips upon their return to work.
