Transportation

Calvert County Public Schools’ transportation services are available to every student enrolled in the school system. The Department of Transportation strives to provide economical and efficient transportation for all students which is safe, both physically and emotionally.

Transportation designs, monitors and revises over 150 daily school bus routes while also scheduling hundreds of co- and extra-curricular bus trips for instructional supervisors.

Transportation trains and evaluates all school bus drivers and bus assistants, while also monitoring the validity of Commercial Driver’s Licenses, Medical Examinations, driving records and criminal background checks.

Transportation uses technology to enhance safety and security by providing:

  1. Two-way radios so bus drivers can communicate with our office and;
  2. Audiovisual recording systems on the buses to assist with the investigation of concerns.
  3. Live global positioning systems (GPS) on each bus. This allows parents to know where the bus is in proximity to the assigned bus stop. Learn more about the Here Comes the Bus App

Additionally, Transportation oversees inspections of all buses multiple times throughout the year to ensure compliance with all Motor Vehicle Administration and Code of Maryland safety standards.

Inclement Weather

Ultimately it is the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee who is responsible for determining when schools will be closed, delayed or released early for emergency purposes.

In cases of inclement weather the Director of Transportation and/or his/her designee will, after conferring with the Director of School Facilities, make a recommendation to the Superintendent regarding the status of schools. To view an explanation of the process used to collect information and make a recommendation to the Superintendent, please refer to the Weather Decisions FAQs for more information.
