English Language Development

The ML program provides English Language Development (ELD) instruction focused on developing English language proficiency in the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. This instruction is delivered through the use of content-specific materials.

Students qualify as multilingual learners based on language proficiency assessments. They exit the ELD program based on their ACCESS scores. Even after exiting, MLs may not be fully proficient, which is why they are monitored for two years and can receive language support as needed.

Active MLs have Language Learning Plans that include accommodations for classroom instruction and on local and state assessments.

Research indicates that it takes 6 months to 2 years for students to become proficient in social language used in informal settings. However, achieving proficiency in academic language used in classrooms typically takes 5 to 7 years, and up to 10 years if the student's only exposure to English is during the school day.

The ELD program is a Federal Title program and operates under federal guidance. Parents may choose to waive direct instructional services, but not the identification, accommodations, or other supports provided to MLs. ELD teachers are required to participate in professional development, engage families through meetings, information sessions, and activities. Classroom teachers of MLs must also receive professional development on working with MLs in content and grade-level classrooms.

The ML program serves students in grades K-12, excluding PreK due to the strength of language development in that program. There are between 200-250 students in the program, representing about 1.5% of the total school population. Students are born in over 20 countries, with the majority born in the United States. They speak over 30 languages, with Spanish being the most common, spoken by over 75% of the students.
