Grading Guides
Calvert County Public Schools updated grading procedures in 2026 with the goal of making grading clear, consistent, and focused on what students know and are able to do. Across grade levels, students have opportunities to practice, receive feedback, demonstrate their learning, and, when appropriate, relearn material and try again.
This webpage is designed to give families a quick, easy-to-understand overview of CCPS grading practices at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. For complete information, please review the CCPS 3415 Grading Policy and Procedures.
Understanding Process and Product Assignments
Throughout CCPS, teachers use assignments for different purposes. The way these assignments are weighted varies by school level and, in some cases, by subject or course.
- Process assignments are completed while students are learning. They give students opportunities to practice, receive feedback, and improve their understanding.
- Product assignments are completed after instruction and allow students to demonstrate what they have learned. Examples may include tests, quizzes, projects, performance tasks, and presentations.
Relearning and Reassessment
Learning does not always happen on the first attempt. CCPS grading procedures provide opportunities for students to relearn material and reassess their understanding. Specific requirements and the number of reassessment opportunities vary by school level.
Students are expected to complete the original work and participate in required relearning before reassessing. When a reassessment is completed, the higher score is recorded when specified by the procedures.
Make-Up Work and Absences
Students will have opportunities to make up required work following an absence. At the middle and high school levels, students receive at least two school days to make up work following the first day of an absence, plus one additional school day for each additional consecutive day absent. Elementary teachers identify which missed assignments students need to complete and may excuse other assignments when appropriate.
Staying Informed
Families are encouraged to regularly review their child's grades and assignments in Home Access Center (HAC) and contact the teacher whenever they have questions or concerns about progress. Teachers will also communicate grading expectations and reach out when additional support may be needed.
Questions About Your Child's Grade?
Families are encouraged to begin by reviewing Home Access Center (HAC) and contacting the classroom teacher with questions about an assignment, reassessment opportunity, missing work, or overall progress. Our goal is for grades to give families meaningful information about what students have learned, where they may need additional support, and how families and schools can work together to help students succeed.
