School Safety Message from Calvert County Schools

Posted: Thursday, December 20, 2012

Dear Parents:

Unfortunately, in these uncertain times, rumors are circulating in our schools and communities.  These rumors are overwhelming our community as well as almost every school community in our region and maybe across the nation. These rumors stem from the fear of a copycat event following the tragic events in Connecticut. In addition, rumors are intertwined with conversations about the Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world.

As these rumors come to our attention, we fully investigate the reports for which we have specific information such as names and specific locations.   If your child has specific information about a threat to a school, we want your child to notify a school administrator immediately.  We will contact law enforcement and take every possible action.  To date, all reports that we and law enforcement have investigated have been deemed to contain no evidence of a credible threat to our students, staff or school community.

Unfortunately, if your child has no specific information and cannot tell us from whom they heard the rumor, we have no course of action available to us.

Our primary responsibility is the safety and security of our school community.  We appreciate anything you can do to help us keep our community safe while dispelling unfounded rumors.

For more information about specific measures the school system takes regarding school security, read my Superintendentís letter here.

Sincerely,

Jack R. Smith, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools
