SAV Data Page
Seventh grade students have been collecting SAV Data from Cocktown Creek for the past several years. The CHESPAX staff is in the process of formatting the data to make it simpler to use in web based activities in the classroom. The study involves identifying the SAV species that occur within a marked study area within Cocktown Creek. A single class will generally collect data from two separate sections of the creek and record the total variety of SAV species observed.
SAV is collected by means of a small bamboo rake which is used
to gently scrape the creek bottom to locate the plants. Small samples of each
variety collected are taken back to shore for identification and recording onto
standard data forms. Data are submitted to the U.S.F.W.S. which is monitoring
SAV throughout the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
