Bluefish

This ocean going fish can often be found in the Chesapeake Bay, especially in the late spring through the early fall season.  Bluefish will sometimes move into the saltier parts of the Patuxent River and rarely, will travel as far up the river as King's Landing Park.  Seventh grade classes have collected bluefish during the seining studies at KLP.

Bluefish are well equipped to serve as the predators that they are!  The possess a stream-lined body that allows for the speed required to chase a school of baitfish and a set of sharp teeth and powerful jaws to catch their prey.  Bluefish migrate out of the Bay in the fall and head out into the open ocean or to the southern U.S. coast to spend the winter months.
