Oysters

Oysters

Program Description Fifth Grade

Students learn about the importance of the Eastern Oyster to the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Students discover that the oyster population today is only a small fraction of the population that existed a century ago. Students visit Flag Ponds Nature Park or Fishing Creek in Chesapeake Beach to assist in an oyster gardening project and to learn first hand, about the the role of the oyster in the ecology of the bay. Students use what they have learned to create a flyer or poster to promote oyster gardening among Calvert County residents.

Write your representative:

During the 2016-2017 school year, students were offered the chance to write their elected representative and give their opinion about a recent oyster harvesting issue where the watermen were asking for oyster sanctuaries to be open for harvesting.  The students were given articles to read that were converted to fifth grade friendly terms and showed both sides of the issue.
