Mathematics for All

All students can learn mathematics, and they deserve the opportunity to do so.

Calvert County Public Schools Mathematics curriculum is based on the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards, Core Learning Goals and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.

Our goal is that all students:

  1. Learn to value mathematics
  2. Become confident in their ability to do mathematics
  3. Become mathematical problem solvers
  4. Learn to communicate mathematically
  5. Learn to reason mathematically

Calvert County Public Schools mathematics curriculum is the foundation for instructional practice within our mathematics classrooms. We recognize that “mathematics is more than a collection of concepts and skills to be mastered; it includes methods of investigating and reasoning, means of communication, and notions of context.”(NCTM pg 5) Doing mathematics is a journey and a cycle, not just an application of a computational procedure to find an answer.

It is our goal to build the students’ conceptual understanding and ability to apply mathematics along with their procedural knowledge. Students who understand why a mathematical procedure works are far more apt to use their knowledge and understanding to problem-solve with less familiar tasks. Students need to interpret and construct knowledge, rather than just absorb it; that is why mathematics at all levels must foster active student involvement.

Parent Roadmaps to the Common Core Standards: Mathematics

The Council of the Great City Schools' parent roadmaps in mathematics provide guidance to parents about what their children will be learning and how they can support that learning in grades K-8. These parent roadmaps for each grade level also provide three-year snapshots showing how selected standards progress from year to year so that students will be college and career ready upon their graduation from high school.

Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) is providing these as a resource to parents & guardians. The roadmaps are not a representation of CCPS mathematics curriculum.
