Worm Snail

Worm Snail (Vermetidae)

SHELL LENGTH: Approximately 2-5 inchesinch (5-10 cm)

Although they look like worms, these animals are actually a type of snail that does not have the typical coiled shell of most other animals in this group.

In some areas these animals form reefs composed of the shells of thousands of worm snails. These filter-feeding shelled snails, eat algae and plankton. Although they were once found off of the Georgia coast, today worm snail reefs may be seen in southwestern Florida, south of Fort Meyers in the Ten Thousand Islands area.
