Spot

During a year following a severe drought, when the salinity of the Patuxent River increases, it is possible to catch a spot as far upriver as King's Landing.  This is a very rare species for this site but more than one record exists for the park during our seventh grade seine hauls.  The spot is a fish more common in the lower Patuxent and in the Bay where it prefers the saltier water of these areas.  The spot is a bottom feeder, searching for small worms and other invertebrates on the muddy bottom of the river and bay.  The spot receives its name from the dark spot located behind the head above the gill plate.  Look also for colorful streaks that angle along the body of this fish.  Spot are members of the drum family of fishes and are capable of making a croaking sound by vibrating an air bladder inside the body.

The spot is a favorite of Bay fishermen since they are so easy to catch during the summer and fall seasons.  These fish are important commercially as well, you can often find spot for sale in your local fish market!
